Football club MŠK Žilina on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 prematurely ended cooperation with head coach Pavol Staňo. It happened after the third round of the new Niké league season, in which the team has four points from three matches. STVR (Spravy) ↗
The club's management reacted to the start of the 2026/2027 season, which did not meet expectations. Žilina failed not only in the domestic competition but also in cup football in Europe. First, it did not advance from the first qualifying round of the Europa League against Hajduk Split and subsequently was eliminated in the second qualifying round of the Conference League against GKS Katowice. Staňo ended his tenure after 13 months. The immediate sporting impetus was also the loss to Skalica, after which the club decided to make a change in the coaching position. Žilina is, after Banská Bystrica, another participant in Slovakia's top league to change coaches already at the beginning of the season. kultura.pravda.sk ↗
Vladimír Veselý became the new head coach, who previously worked as an assistant coach. His task will be to stabilize the team after the early exit from European competitions and improve results in the Niké league. Further developments will show whether the coaching change will bring Žilina a quick turnaround in the domestic league. teraz.sk ↗
