US Warning of NATO Attack Extends to 2029. Slovak Agency Version Left Only Fall Threat, Estonian Ex-Intelligence Chief Calls It Speculation

According to American assessments that sources familiar with their contents reported on, Vladimir Putin may be more willing than a few months ago to risk provocation against NATO. Slovak readers learned about this on Friday as a threat "already in autumn," although the original assessment discusses a window from this autumn through 2029 and marks the probability of the most extreme scenario as low. From Estonia, which would be among the most exposed countries in such a scenario, a contrasting voice emerged: the former head of that country's foreign intelligence called the report exaggerated speculation that plays into Moscow's hands.

Estonian ex-intelligence chief: it plays into Russia's hands

Rainer Saks headed Estonian foreign intelligence from 2011 to 2015 and served as secretary general of the foreign ministry from 2015 to 2020. He told the public broadcaster ERR that claims by anonymous American sources about a possible limited Russian attack on NATO are exaggerated speculation. "While Russia is not planning such actions, publishing such assessments in the current context plays very strongly into Russia's hands," he said. ERR ↗

His argument rests on three pillars. The first is Russian capacity: "Russia is in exactly the same position of weakness. All its rocket capacity is concentrated on Ukraine and it is incapable of conducting extensive rocket attacks every day." The second is the absence of preparations — an operation against NATO would, in his view, require full mobilization and martial law, which Russia has not resorted to in four years of war. The third is the construction of the report itself: Saks criticizes it for the scope of the window from autumn to 2029 and for covering practically every conceivable attack vector. "It is another classic case where anonymous sources said something, fragments were written down, but official comments are either not available or were refused," he added. What Survived the Translation into Slovak

The assessment, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, contains two safeguards. The first is a time window: not autumn, but the period from this autumn through 2029. The second is probability — for the most extreme scenario, namely a limited ground invasion, the assessment currently marks it as low, though it grows over time. Kyiv Independent ↗

American CBS News, which verified the report with its own sources, additionally emphasized that the discussion concerns primarily hybrid operations, cyberattacks, and other deniable steps below the threshold of conventional military campaign. In Slovakia, only one agency reported on the matter. The SITA text omitted both safeguards — neither 2029 nor the word about low probability appear in it, although it correctly adds that "this is not a scenario of large-scale military invasion". Czech newsrooms, however, included both safeguards. ČT24 wrote that a hybrid attack or limited ground invasion "could occur between autumn of this year and 2029," and added that the probability of the most extreme scenario is low but growing. Limits of This Perspective

The Baltic region does not speak with one voice and it would be an error to present Saks's view as its position. Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated, according to ČT24, that "the Kremlin and Putin need new escalation, some new victory, and in this case the Baltics and Poland are the nearest targets," and spoke of intelligence information about possible false-flag attacks with drones of Ukrainian manufacture. His remark also partially holds that Poland and Romania themselves have not characterized recent incidents as an intentional test. Warsaw reported the impact of the Russian Kh-101 cruise missile from July 30 as a consequence of Russia's campaign against Ukraine, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke of the need for one hundred percent certainty about which missile was involved. And finally: Saks's hypothesis about a budgetary motive for the leak is his speculation, not a documented fact. However, context exists. The US consumed nearly four-fifths of THAAD anti-missile reserves and roughly half of Patriot missiles during the war with Iran, CNN reported citing two sources familiar with the latest inventory.
