Lufthansa's profit falls on expensive fuel and strikes

Lufthansa recorded a significant decline in profit in the second quarter, as its performance was hit by high jet fuel prices and employee strikes. The company stated that adjusted operating profit for the April-to-June period was affected mainly by the consequences of the war in Iran, which drove up kerosene prices, and by a week-long strike in April. Despite continued travel demand and revenue growth, the German airline group's operating result fell sharply in the second quarter. According to published figures, operating profit roughly halved compared with the previous period. Lufthansa also indicated that rising costs could also be reflected in higher ticket prices. The carrier's problems are compounded by disruptions in air operations during the peak holiday season. At Barcelona airport, ground staff at Groundforce, which services several airlines including Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Air Europa, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways, went on strike. The strike has caused flight cancellations from Barcelona airport and, according to available information, could affect up to two million passengers. teraz.sk ↗

Lufthansa is therefore acknowledging that its profit could decline for the full year 2026. Further developments will depend mainly on fuel prices, labor disputes, and airlines' ability to pass higher costs on to ticket prices without significantly weakening demand. Tagesspiegel ↗
