Mancini returns to the bench of the Italian national team

Roberto Mancini has become the new coach of the Italian national football team. The Italian football federation FIGC announced this on Tuesday, following a period of uncertainty that followed Gennaro Gattuso's departure in April. The sixty-one-year-old coach returns to the national team after three years and is beginning his second spell in charge of the side. Index.hu ↗

Mancini previously led Italy from 2018 to 2023 and won the European champion title with the team in 2021. After leaving the national team, he worked in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. His return comes after an unsuccessful search for a new coach, during which names such as Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, and Andrea Pirlo were also mentioned. El Pais ↗

Italian football has been going through another crisis in recent weeks. Paolo Maldini and Leonardo left the federation's leadership following a dispute over the future direction of the national team and Pirlo's candidacy. According to foreign media, Guardiola's refusal and the opposition to Pirlo accelerated the decision to turn to a coach who had already achieved significant success with the national team. SITA ↗

Mancini's task will be to stabilize the national team after a period of changes and to restore its standing following the setbacks that led to the departure of the previous coaching staff. The federation thus opted for an experienced coach familiar with the environment instead of another experiment. sport.sk ↗
