Tisza nominates Sonnevend for constitutional judge

Hungary's Tisza party announced on Saturday, July 25, 2026, that it is nominating lawyer Pál Sonnevend for constitutional judge. The nomination relates to the expiration of Csaba Hende's mandate, after which the parliamentary committee for justice and constitutional affairs asked the factions, including Tisza, to submit candidates. Pál Sonnevend works at the Faculty of Law of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest as head of department and university professor. In the past he also served as dean of this faculty. Tisza announced its nomination on social media, making it one of the party's first personnel nominations in this area. Telex ↗

The Fidesz faction responded to Tisza's move with a statement questioning the legal basis of the entire process. According to Fidesz, Csaba Hende's mandate is ending on the basis of illegitimate legal regulations. The party thus labeled the circumstances of the replacement as problematic, although Tisza's announcement itself also drew positive reactions. Telex ↗

Minister Tibor Navracsics, a Fidesz politician, unexpectedly congratulated on the nomination and spoke favorably of it. Political analyst Gábor Török described the nomination as encouraging and noted that first nominations carry significant symbolic weight. Further developments will depend on the parliamentary procedure and on how the other factions respond to Tisza's proposal. Index.hu ↗
