Forsthoffer temporarily assumes powers of head of state

The Hungarian parliament began Tuesday's session with a speech by Ágnes Forsthoffer, who has been temporarily exercising the powers of the president since the end of Tamás Sulyok's mandate. She addressed the chamber even before the session's agenda began, speaking of an extraordinary constitutional situation in which, according to her, she must assume responsibility. HVG ↗

Forsthoffer was already seated in the state box, and MPs greeted her arrival with applause. According to reports, Péter Magyar also noticed her arrival and began applauding. However, according to one article, the opposition deliberately did not attend her address delivered within the powers of the head of state. Index.hu ↗

In her speech titled Thoughts on Unity, she emphasized that the unity of the nation does not mean that all citizens share the same opinions. She criticized the tone of public discussion on social media and warned that words can both build and destroy society. She rejected attacks on people based on their appearance, origin, or gender, and noted that similar remarks in recent days had also concerned politicians sitting in the chamber. Telex ↗

After Forsthoffer took over the presidential powers, her duties as speaker of parliament are being temporarily carried out by deputy speaker Anikó Hallerné Nagy. At the start of the session, she also introduced a technical change to how MPs register to speak in the debate. Further developments will depend on how parliament resolves the interim occupation of the presidential office following Sulyok's departure. Index.hu ↗
