The forest fire in Müritz National Park in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, continues to spread. The Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district stated that the affected area amounts to nearly four square kilometers, or approximately 388 hectares. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Parts of Germany's largest inland national park are burning. Authorities have urged holidaymakers to give the area a wide berth. The situation is complicated by smoke, smoldering fire spots, and old ordnance left over from the area's time as a former military site. Explosions have repeatedly been heard during the operation, making the firefighters' work more difficult and increasing the risk on the ground. Spiegel.de ↗

The German military has also joined the firefighting effort. Bundeswehr helicopters are dropping water on the fire and helping to bring the flames under control. Although there were fewer open flames in some spots, authorities are not yet describing the situation as calming down. Expected storms, from which emergency crews had hoped for rain, bypassed the area on Friday. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Further developments will depend on the weather, firefighters' access to the fire spots, and safety restrictions caused by the ordnance. Authorities are therefore continuing to plan for an extensive operation and restrictions for park visitors. Tagesspiegel ↗
