Prien plans to shorten parental allowance, Platner faces accusation

German Family Minister Karin Prien is preparing a change to parental allowance. The bill envisages shortening the maximum period for receiving the benefit from the current 14 to 12 months. The change concerns the support that parents can receive after the birth of a child during a break from work. Die Zeit ↗

According to the proposal, the rules for dividing the benefit between parents should also be adjusted. Based on available information, mothers and fathers would each have to receive the allowance for at least three months. The coalition agreement between the Union and SPD parties had already envisaged further development of parental allowance. Prien's proposal thus suggests that the government wants to change the system not only in terms of duration, but also in the setting of each parent's share. Tagesspiegel ↗

At the same time, American politics is dealing with an accusation against Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the Senate in the state of Maine. His former partner Jenny Racicot stated that he forced her into sexual intercourse almost five years ago. Platner denies the accusation. The candidate had already faced several controversies before, as well as reports about behavior that, according to former partners, caused concern. The Guardian ↗

In Germany, further developments will depend on the legislative process and reactions to the proposed restriction of the benefit. In the United States, the new accusation could further affect Platner's campaign in Maine, as it comes at a time when his candidacy is already under pressure from previous scandals. Independent ↗
