Willis was a native of Texas and was one of the most prominent faces of the disco era of the 1970s. On stage, he performed mainly in the costume of a policeman, or alternatively a naval officer, which became part of the visual identity of Village People. He was the group's lead singer and co-writer of several of its best-known songs. France24 ↗

Among the songs with which his name is associated are especially Y.M.C.A., In The Navy, Go West and Macho Man. It was Y.M.C.A. that became one of the band's most famous hits and has endured as a symbol of the disco period. Willis died a day before his 75th birthday. sme.sk ↗

After leaving the group in the early 1980s, the singer also became involved in legal disputes concerning the copyright to songs he had helped write. His death closes a chapter on one of the most recognizable voices of the American disco scene, whose songs have remained part of popular culture even decades after Village People's greatest success. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
