Canadian hockey forward Gavin McKenna became the overall first pick of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. The eighteen-year-old was selected in Friday's first round in Buffalo by the Toronto Maple Leafs club, which reached for the top-rated talent as expected. sport.cz - fotbal ↗
The first pick was announced by singer Justin Bieber. McKenna confirmed the streak of Canadian draft first picks, as a player from Canada took the top spot for the fourth year in a row. According to available information, his position was not shaken even by the bar incident that sources had mentioned before the draft. hnonline.sk ↗
The first round did not bring the selection of any Slovak hockey player. The highest-ranked Czech player was forward Adam Novotný, whom Vancouver picked at 24th. San Jose reached for a Swedish player who saddened the Slovaks at the World Championship. The draft was also influenced by moves between clubs, including a trade linked to Šimon Nemec, while Montreal, according to sources, once again showed its draft-day specialty. dennikn.sk ↗
McKenna's arrival in Toronto will be among the main topics in the further development of the Maple Leafs club. After the first round, attention shifts to the later parts of the draft, in which Slovak players may also get their turn. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
