Former Russian defense minister and ex-chief of the presidential administration Sergei Ivanov died on Friday at the age of 73. The news was announced by the Kremlin, which did not specify the cause of death and provided no further details. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

Ivanov was among the longtime associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to available information, he had already worked with Putin within Soviet security structures and later held significant positions in the Russian state. In the past, he was considered one of the most influential men in the Kremlin, and at one point was spoken of as a possible successor to Putin as president. pravda.sk ↗

His influence gradually diminished in subsequent years. This past February, Putin removed him from the post of special envoy for environmental protection and transport, a role Ivanov had held for approximately ten years. Before that, he had also served as defense minister and head of the presidential administration, positions that placed him among the key figures of the Russian power apparatus. irozhlas.cz ↗

Ivanov's death is a reminder of the generation of officials who rose to the highest levels of politics alongside Putin and who influenced the workings of the Kremlin for many years. Since Russian authorities have not disclosed further circumstances of his death, further developments will depend on whether the Kremlin releases new information. svet.sme.sk ↗
