Spain began the 2026 World Cup in North America with an unexpected 0:0 draw against Cape Verde. On Monday in Atlanta, the reigning European champions failed to overcome a debutant at the world championship, which several articles described as the tournament's biggest surprise so far. Coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed before the match that Lamine Yamal is fit after a left thigh muscle injury, but would not start in the lineup. The eighteen-year-old Barcelona winger eventually made it onto the pitch as a substitute, and his entrance was greeted with applause from the stadium. However, even his arrival did not bring Spain a decisive breakthrough. SITA ↗
The favorites had trouble against a deep-defending opponent and, according to available information, found few solutions in the final phase of their attacks. Pedri and Yamal were the most prominent in attack, but they remained too isolated. Cape Verde relied on a disciplined performance and a goalkeeper who stopped the Spanish stars on several occasions. sme.sk ↗
After the match, de la Fuente reminded everyone that his team is still the European champion, while also acknowledging a practical lesson from the opening stumble. Spain will need to confirm its role as favorite and improve its efficiency in the group's further matches, while Cape Verde took away a valuable point and a remarkable result against one of the title contenders after their historic World Cup debut. sport.sk ↗
