Zdena Mašínová, daughter of resistance fighter Josef Mašín, has died

Zdena Mašínová, daughter of the Czechoslovak anti-Nazi resistance fighter Josef Mašín and sister of Josef and Ctirad Mašín, has died at the age of 92. The news was announced on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, by historian Petr Blažek and also by the Confederation of Political Prisoners. irozhlas.cz ↗

Mašínová came from a family markedly affected by both totalitarian regimes. Her father, Josef Mašín, was among the heroes of the second (wartime) resistance and was executed during the Nazi occupation. After the communist regime took power, the family faced further persecution. Her brothers Josef and Ctirad Mašín became members of an armed resistance group, and after their escape to the West, Zdena Mašínová remained in Czechoslovakia, exposed to pressure from the regime. ihned.cz ↗

Because of a physical disability, she did not take part in resistance activities herself, yet under communist rule she was persecuted and imprisoned. After her brothers' escape, she lost a large part of her family support, and for decades her life remained bound up with the consequences of the repression directed at the Mašín family. denik.cz ↗

Following her death, historian Petr Blažek and Prime Minister Petr Fiala both paid public tribute to Mašínová. Her life story remains part of the debates about the second and third resistance, about anti-communist resistance, and about the fates of families affected by both Nazi and communist persecution. zpravy.aktualne.cz ↗
