According to first estimates and preliminary results, pro-Western Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan won the parliamentary elections in Armenia. The Central Election Commission in Yerevan stated that his Civil Contract party won approximately 54 to 57 percent of the vote, with Pashinyan declaring his party's victory overnight. The elections were considered an important test of the country's further geopolitical direction in the South Caucasus. Pashinyan's government is pushing for deepening relations with the West and moving closer to the European Union. At the same time, it is seeking a peace agreement with Azerbaijan, which was among the key issues of the vote. Der Standard ↗

According to the first data, the pro-Russian party Strong Armenia trailed behind Pashinyan's party. Preliminary results published after the polling stations closed were initially based on approximately five percent of the votes counted. Later estimates confirmed the governing party's significant lead. Voter turnout, according to available data, reached approximately 59 percent. Deutschlandfunk ↗

The result suggests that Armenia may continue its pro-Western course and efforts to distance itself further from Russia. Further developments will depend on the final results and on how the new political situation affects negotiations on relations with Western partners as well as the peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
