Serena Williams will not appear in the Wimbledon doubles either after her singles exit. The 44-year-old American withdrew from Saturday's first-round match due to a knee injury, and will therefore not play the planned duel alongside her older sister Venus. ta3.com ↗
Williams was unsuccessful in her return to Grand Slam singles, exiting Wimbledon 2026 already in the first round. On Centre Court, she lost to twenty-year-old Australian Maya Joint 3:6, 7:6 (8:6), 3:6. After the match, doubts arose as to whether her physical condition would allow her to also take the court in doubles. ta3.com ↗
For Williams, this was her first singles match on the Grand Slam stage in nearly four years. On the court where she won seven singles titles, she was welcomed by applause from the crowd before the match. In the second set, she staved off the threat of a quick finish, won the tiebreak, and forced a deciding set. In that set, however, unseeded Joint, who according to available data is ranked 87th in the world, gained the upper hand. Tagesspiegel ↗
The match showed that even after a long break, Williams retained the strength of her serve, reaching speeds of around 120 miles per hour. The main problem was her movement and the closing stages of the match, in which the difference in fitness between the former champion and an opponent more than two decades younger became apparent. kultura.pravda.sk ↗
The withdrawal from the doubles means that Serena Williams's Wimbledon return ended before she could revive the successful shared past she once had with Venus. It remains open whether she will continue her return to the top level after the London tournament. dennikn.sk ↗
