Sanctioned Russian ship delivered armored vehicles to the junta in Mali. BBC tracked it from Baltiysk through the English Channel

The sanctioned Russian cargo ship Mikhail Britnev unloaded military equipment at the Togolese port of Lomé in early July, and two weeks later a column of armored vehicles passed through Bamako, broadcast by Malian state television. The BBC Verify verification team drew this connection from ship movement data and satellite imagery. The delivery comes at a moment when the Malian junta has suffered a series of defeats in the north and is responding only with fragile counteroffensives — Moscow, however, is nonetheless increasing its military support.

The ship that switched off its transponder along the way

Mikhail Britnev left the Russian Baltic port of Baltiysk on June 18, crossed the North Sea, and sailed into the English Channel. According to BBC Verify's findings, it was accompanied through the Channel by a Russian Ropucha-class naval vessel. The British Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the matter. BBC Verify ↗

After passing through the Channel, the ship switched off its transponder and reappeared in the data only while maneuvering toward the pier in Lomé, where it anchored on July 9. The United States had already sanctioned it in 2024. Experts who analyzed satellite images from Baltiysk for the BBC identified cargo trucks, BTR-type armored personnel carriers, and light infantry vehicles on board. BBC Verify ↗

On July 25, Malian state television broadcast footage of a column of armored vehicles arriving in Bamako. According to its reporters, the convoy came from the port of Lomé, that is, through Togo and Burkina Faso, which is likewise led by a military junta aligned with Moscow. Mali is a landlocked state with no access to the sea, so every heavy shipment must arrive via a neighbor's port and then travel hundreds of kilometers overland — Lomé therefore serves as Bamako's maritime gateway, and Burkina Faso as the overland corridor. Analysts at Janes told the BBC that the vehicles could be used for both logistics and combat operations. BBC Verify ↗

Baltiysk, moreover, is not a one-off stop. BBC Verify states that the port has served as the starting point for several voyages carrying military materiel to West Africa — in February, the ship Sabetta loaded there before anchoring in Conakry, Guinea, and on June 6 another tanker loaded equipment there, one that never appeared at all in ship movement data. Why now: the junta is losing ground in the north

Russia has supported the Malian military government since the departure of French forces in 2022, in exchange for cash payments and preferential access to mines and gold deposits. Initially the mercenary Wagner Group operated there, but its operations were taken over by Africa Corps, which falls under the Russian Ministry of Defence. BBC Verify ↗

Since April 25, when the conflict entered a new phase, the junta has been losing territory. That is when a coordinated offensive began against the junta's headquarters in Bamako as well as against Kidal and Gao; shortly afterward Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed in an assassination in Kati, and on the third day Kidal fell, from which Africa Corps withdrew. The Islamist movement Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, linked to al-Qaeda, and the Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front have since taken control of a large part of the north.

The record of recent weeks is mixed, but unfavorable for the junta. In July the army claimed to have recaptured the northern town of Anefis, which insurgents had held for six days beforehand — but according to the army chief of staff, about thirty of its soldiers were killed in the operation and another sixty wounded. Al Jazeera ↗ A few days later came a heavy convoy ambush. Insurgents have attacked Anefis repeatedly, and fighting has also been reported near Niono and in other parts of central Mali. BBC Verify ↗

Charlie Werb, an analyst at Aldebaran Threat Consultants, told the BBC that the new delivery could help Malian and Russian forces gather enough strength for counteroffensives into lost areas. "The Kremlin has maintained steady military support since April 25, when the conflict entered a new phase — bringing in fresh forces, weapons, and equipment," he said. According to him, the delivery shows that Mali remains key to Russian strategy in Africa. BBC Verify ↗

The video with prisoners: what is documented and what the insurgents claim

It is in this context that the Azawad Liberation Front released a video on August 1 which, according to the separatists, shows more than two hundred captured Malian soldiers. France 24 ↗ This number is, for now, a claim by the insurgent side and has not been independently confirmed.

What is documented is smaller in scale, but more serious. During the ambush of a convoy on July 18, which was heading from Anefis to Gao and fell into a trap near Tabankort, both insurgent groups claimed responsibility for the attack. AFP reported at the time that the Azawad Liberation Front had released footage purporting to show dozens of captured soldiers. Al Jazeera ↗

After analyzing twelve videos, Amnesty International stated that three of them contain evidence of war crimes. The footage shows at least nineteen Malian soldiers walking through the desert with their hands behind their heads, apparently surrendering; another video shows the bodies of the same men up close; and in a third, five armed men shoot into a group of people lying on the ground. The organization is calling for an investigation. BBC Verify ↗

The difference between "more than two hundred" and "at least nineteen" is not a minor detail. The first figure is a claim from the side that is winning and needs to demonstrate it; the second is a forensically substantiated count of victims of a specific crime.

The limits of what we know

Even the BBC does not claim that the vehicles from Baltiysk and the column in Bamako are demonstrably the same pieces of equipment. The chain consists of three verifiable links — satellite images of the loading, data on the voyage and anchoring in Lomé, and Malian state television's footage of the convoy from Lomé. The missing fourth link, namely direct identification of specific vehicles, is why the BBC speaks of equipment that "appears to have been delivered" by this ship.

Nor do we know who paid for the delivery or whether it was a sale or direct Russian military assistance. Neither the Russian nor the Malian side has commented on the voyage. And in the end, the vehicles alone will not decide the war. Estimates of Russian forces in Mali vary — Al Jazeera put the figure at roughly two thousand men, while Le Monde cited a lower number. Africa Corps itself estimates insurgent forces at ten to twelve thousand fighters. Al Jazeera ↗
