Portugal's footballers advanced to the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico after a 2:1 win over Croatia. In the round-of-32 match in Toronto, they trailed 0:1 from the 53rd minute, but turned the match around, with Gonçalo Ramos deciding their progression. SITA ↗
The match brought a clash of two prominent personalities of world football, 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo and 40-year-old Luka Modrić. For the Croatian midfielder, elimination ended his journey at the tournament and, according to available information, also his national team fairy tale. Croatia, meanwhile, also paid the price for disallowed goals in the match, as several of their strikes did not count. sport.sk ↗
Croatia reached the knockout stage from second place in Group L. After losing 2:4 to England, they beat Panama 1:0 and Ghana 2:1. Against Portugal, however, they failed to hold their lead and, after a dramatic course of play, bid farewell to the tournament. From the Croatian camp, there was also dissatisfaction voiced after the match with the referees' decisions. teraz.sk ↗
The number of confirmed round-of-16 participants also grew in other matches. Spain defeated Austria 3:0 thanks to two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and a strike from Pedro Porro, and Switzerland also secured its progression. Portugal thus continues its fight for the title, while Croatia bows out after one of the most closely watched confrontations of the opening round of the knockout stage. hnonline.sk ↗
