Former Hungarian minister Balázs Hankó gave an interview shortly before he was detained on Monday evening in connection with the National Cultural Fund case. The interview was broadcast by Hír TV, and a portion of it was subsequently published on social media by Viktor Orbán, who had announced its broadcast in advance. HVG ↗

On Tuesday, Orbán announced that an exclusive interview with Hankó would be broadcast in the evening via Facebook and Hír TV. The release of the interview came at a time when Hungarian authorities are dealing with criminal proceedings related to the operation of cultural policy and the distribution of funds from the fund. In the interview, Hankó spoke about his role in the case and rejected the way in which, according to him, a cultural-political issue is being turned into a criminal proceeding. He claimed that the aim of such a procedure was to intimidate the people involved. Before his detention, he also stated that inviting politicians to cultural events had long been a normal part of their operations.

Hungarian media reported that after being summoned by the prosecutor's office, Hankó and another person voluntarily appeared for questioning. A pre-trial judge is to decide on their possible pre-trial detention.
