Orbán and Fidesz offer conflicting explanations of the Hankó case

In Hungary, after the arrest of former culture minister Balázs Hankó, discrepancies have emerged between the explanations given by Viktor Orbán and Fidesz officials. During a Saturday trip around the country, Orbán spoke about the case in a way that, according to media reports, differs from the former minister's defense. Telex ↗

On Tuesday, Hankó explained that party affiliation with Fidesz was not important when deciding on the allocation of grants. However, Orbán, in a closed circle, according to a published recording, stated the opposite version. The difference between the two claims concerns the case of the National Cultural Fund, also referred to by the abbreviation NKA. HVG ↗

The recording of Orbán's speech was published by Dániel Bohár. Fidesz officials subsequently responded to its content. Party spokesman Bertalan Havasi stated that, in his view, the prime minister said nothing new and his statements correspond to the party presidium's position, which was published a week earlier.
