🔭 What went unheard in Slovak and Czech media

Three topics from today's window that domestic news coverage doesn't cover — yet they directly affect Slovakia.

Hungary will begin holding back water on the Danube in three weeks. Bulgarian nuclear expert Georgi Kaščiev warns that the Kozloduy power plant may then have to reduce output and that there is no plan for such a situation. Slovak and Czech media had only two wire reports about the Danube and Kozloduy over the past three weeks about the reduction in output — they didn't write about Hungarian water retention or the missing plan. This is the same river on which Gabčíkovo stands.

Six EU countries are asking for a tax on excessive profits of oil giants. It's the first concrete political consequence of the price shock after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In Slovak and Czech media, over the same period, four articles appeared about "windfall tax" — all about the end of the Czech tax and ČEZ profits, none about the new European initiative. Yet this debate will determine who pays for more expensive fuel.

War in Iran revived piracy. Dutch Telegraaf writes that merchant shipping has become a desired target and an attack could happen anytime; Italian Corriere della Sera, meanwhile, describes sailing through the Arctic strait, "while Putin's pirate ships roam outside." Together with South Korea's trial voyage through the Arctic, it's one story: global merchant shipping is shifting and new routes have their own risks.

Limits of this perspective

This is not a summary of what happened in the world. It is a review of what newsrooms in 37 countries noticed and how they presented it over the past eighteen hours. The selection is curatorial: we prioritize politics, geopolitics, economics with impact on public policy, and major incidents; we skip weather, recipes, horoscopes, and local trivia without national significance.

Phrasings in the bullets are translated and shortened — clicking the media name takes you to the original article, which is the source of the claim. Where a medium attributes something to authorities, experts, or investigators, we cite it too; this is not our fact-checking.

Even in this edition, one such difference can be seen directly in the bullets. Hungarian Telex and 444 presented the Iranian threat exactly as it sounded — that it aimed at neighboring countries. Spanish eldiario.es and El Español, Slovenian Delo, and Bulgarian 24 Chasa generalized it to any country that joins American pressure. In the bullets we leave what they actually wrote; in the lede and the topics overview we stick to the narrower, documented version.

One thing is worth acknowledging outright today: Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung brought a story that Slovakia bought traffic cameras from a Cypriot company, even though they come from Russia and receive commands via SMS. It looked like a topic nobody has at home. That's not true — Progressive Slovakia opened the case on August 5 and over ten Slovak newsrooms wrote about it. What's new is only what NZZ adds: the Cypriot intermediary and the detail about SMS commands.
