Manuel Neuer will not play for Bayern Munich in Tuesday's Champions League match against Viking Stavanger. The 40-year-old goalkeeper stayed home as a precaution and did not travel to Norway with the team. Jonas Urbig will replace him in goal. sport.sk ↗
According to coach Vincent Kompany, Neuer felt a problem in the foot area. The decision came after the goalkeeper made two mistakes three days ago in Bayern's 2:2 draw at Augsburg. His performance subsequently faced criticism, but the coach stated that the absence is not related to missing the previous league match or to any punishment. n-tv ↗
Bayern will play in Stavanger on artificial turf, which represents unusual conditions for the German champions. Before the match, Kompany already expressed confidence in Urbig and stated that the team has no doubts about Neuer. Sporting director Max Eberl had not previously specifically confirmed who would be in goal for the match. Sueddeutsche Zeitung ↗
Viking Stavanger is also drawing attention for being led by two head coaches. Kompany experienced a similar model during a previous stint, but according to Eberl, Bayern will not introduce it. The Munich club will try to manage the match in Norway without its experienced captain while also responding to the specifics of the artificial surface. n-tv ↗
