Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that one of the pilots of a Flydubai plane attacked the captain with a knife during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv and then attempted to crash the aircraft. The plane made an emergency landing after the incident, and the suspected pilot was detained by Saudi Arabian authorities. hnonline.sk ↗
Netanyahu said the detained pilot is being interrogated by Saudi Arabian security services. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the incident as a jihadist terrorist attempt. According to Israeli officials, the available evidence suggests that the attack originated directly on board during the flight. NOS ↗
Reports do not specify the exact type of aircraft, including whether it was a Boeing 737 Max. It is also unknown how many people were on board and whether anyone other than the attacked pilot was injured.
Netanyahu thanked the crew and other people on board for their response. He also ordered security forces to prepare for other possible threats. The investigation is expected to clarify the detained pilot's motive, the course of the attack, and how the plane's crash was prevented. ANSA ↗
The incident occurred amid heightened security concerns in the region. Further developments will depend on the results of the interrogation and investigation by Saudi Arabian authorities.
