Julian Álvarez came under strong pressure from his own fans after returning to Atlético Madrid’s squad for the home match against Villarreal. The Argentine forward, who has been mentioned in connection with efforts to leave the club and possible interest from Barcelona, was booed at the Metropolitano stadium when his name was announced and later also while he was on the pitch. sport.sk ↗
Atlético drew 2:2 with Villarreal. Álvarez came on for roughly the final half hour, but according to available information he did not get significantly involved in the game and recorded only one shot in the 90th minute. Tension between the player and part of the crowd was also underlined by a gesture that fans perceived as provocative. Before the match, the club had confirmed his return to the squad after a period of uncertainty around his future. El Mundo ↗
Coach Diego Simeone tried to defuse the situation and urged teammates in the dressing room to support the Argentine forward while he remains part of the team. At the same time, he stressed the need to have important attackers in the squad. Atlético is therefore dealing with both the sporting and atmospheric sides of the case, as the player’s dissatisfaction with his future at the club has already spread to the stands. El Pais ↗
Further developments will depend on whether Álvarez’s transfer situation is resolved during the current window, or whether he remains available to Simeone after the negotiations end.
