Two Germans hung their own paintings next to the Mona Lisa at the Louvre

Two German citizens were detained on September 19 at the Paris museum the Louvre after attaching two of their own paintings to the wall in the room housing the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. They used adhesive tape to do so, and according to police, they claimed it was a prank. n-tv ↗

The incident occurred in the afternoon at around 3:30 p.m. The men placed their paintings directly in the space where one of the most famous works of world art is displayed. Security staff then intervened and detained both visitors. ORF ↗

Police classified the case as minor damage to the premises. According to available information, the Mona Lisa itself remained undamaged. It is not known whether removing the paintings caused any permanent damage to the wall, nor what further steps the authorities will take against the detained men. Le Figaro ↗

The Louvre has recently faced several security incidents. The museum is therefore paying increased attention to protecting the works on display as well as monitoring visitors' behavior.
