Ronaldo did not take part in Sunday's 2:1 victory of Portugal over Norway, watching the entire match from the substitutes' bench. He subsequently missed the team's training sessions in preparation for the next match. Portuguese media linked his departure to tension between the player and the new national team coach Jorge Jesus. isport.cz ↗

Jesus had previously denied that a conflict had arisen between him and Ronaldo. "Es gab kein Problem," the coach stated after Ronaldo did not appear in the lineup against Norway. Nevertheless, media reports emerged about a deterioration in their relationship and about the forward's dissatisfaction with his position among the substitutes. Der Standard ↗

Ronaldo also indicated that he would explain the reasons for his decision later. "En temps voulu, je dirai la vérité à tous les Portugais," he said. His sister Elma Aveiro reacted on social media with support, writing that he deserves respect. Le Figaro ↗

It is not yet clear whether this is merely an early departure from the current national team gathering, or the beginning of the end of Ronaldo's career in the national team. Portugal is next scheduled to face Denmark in the Nations League. Tagesspiegel ↗
