Storms after heatwave claim a victim in Germany

Following the peak of a heatwave, strong storms hit Germany, claiming at least one victim in Saxon Switzerland. Near Rathen, close to the natural stage Felsenbühne, a tree fell during the severe weather and killed a man. According to rescue services, ten other people were injured.

The German meteorological service had previously expected temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius in some places on Thursday, July 30, but preliminary data subsequently showed that the 40-degree mark was exceeded in several locations. In Bavaria, a preliminary 40.4 degrees was recorded, marking a July record for the federal state. Saxony-Anhalt also reported a new July record, though according to available information the nationwide temperature record was not broken.

After the heat came a rapid change in the weather, with storms, gusts of wind, and fallen trees. Firefighters responded in several places across the country, including Stuttgart, Hamburg, and the Prignitz region in Brandenburg. In Hamburg, callouts mounted very quickly, while in Stuttgart and Prignitz the main problems were caused by uprooted trees and broken branches. Missing persons were also reported following the storms.

Warnings applied to other parts of Germany as well, including Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hamburg, and its surroundings. Meteorologists also warned of further storms in Baden-Württemberg and the lingering heat in Bavaria, where temperatures of up to 38 degrees were still expected. Further developments will depend on how the storms progress and how quickly cooler air moves in.
