The Social Democratic Party of Germany, the Greens and Die Linke have begun negotiations in Berlin on forming a joint state government. The parties want to proceed quickly with the talks, and a coalition agreement could be concluded by Christmas. However, the outcome is not yet certain. Tagesschau ↗
Die Linke parliamentary group leader Elif Eralp described the opening round of talks as successful. Further discussions are scheduled for Wednesday. The parties must agree on a joint government program as well as on the division of responsibilities. Die Zeit ↗
At the same time, reservations about cooperating with Die Linke persist within the SPD. Several prominent Social Democrats have publicly spoken out against the planned coalition, including Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, former Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, and former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel. Approximately 1,180 SPD members have warned against cooperation with the Left. Tagesschau ↗
Berlin Die Linke leader Pantisano claims that voters want Elif Eralp to become mayor of Berlin. Within Die Linke, however, disputes are also being addressed concerning MP Vanessa Emde, who faces criticism for her statements on the conflict in the Middle East. The party is set to discuss her future role within the parliamentary group again. Tagesspiegel ↗
The future of the red-green-red government will depend on the outcome of the coalition negotiations and on the parties' ability to overcome differences both within the SPD and within Die Linke.
