Konštantín (I.), zvaný Veľký, bol od roku 306 rímsky cisár, od roku 324 jediný rímsky cisár. V roku 324 vyšiel víťazne z bojov o rímsky trón, ktoré vypukli po odchode cisára Diokleciána a znovuzjednotil rímsku ríšu pod jedným cisárom. Ešte v roku 313 tzv. Milánskym ediktom prvýkrát povolil kresťanstvo ako oficiálne náboženstvo. Nadviazal na Diokleciánove reformy a v roku 330 na mieste staršej gréckej osady Byzantion založil Konštantínopol, ktorý sa stal novým hlavným mestom ako protiklad „pohanského“ Ríma. Roku 332 uzákonil dedičné pripútanie kolónov k pôde. Tesne pred smrťou prijal krst.
