President of the United States Donald Trump urged residents of Arkansas to call Senator Tom Cotton and persuade him to support making daylight saving time permanent. Cotton, a Republican senator for Arkansas, is reportedly holding up the proposal, which is among the president's priorities. Spiegel.de ↗
On Saturday, Trump published a phone number associated with Cotton and appealed to the public to contact the senator. The president thereby sought to increase pressure on lawmakers over keeping daylight saving time in place year-round in the United States. The Guardian ↗
The proposal envisions that clocks would no longer be regularly shifted between standard time and daylight saving time. The change would mean keeping daylight saving time throughout the entire year, which would eliminate the current seasonal switching of time.
Cotton's position is important given his standing in the Senate and his representation of Arkansas. Trump therefore directed his appeal straight at the state's residents, urging them to apply public pressure on the senator.
It is unclear whether Cotton will change his position after the president's appeal or whether the proposal will gain enough support to advance. The debate over permanent daylight saving time in the United States continues, and its outcome will depend on the stance of senators, including Cotton.
