Two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, shot three men dead on Monday in front of the Islamic Center of San Diego and took their own lives in a car a few streets away, California police announced. Local police chief Scott Wahl is classifying the attack as a presumed hate crime — a note containing "general hateful rhetoric" was found on one of the suspects. BBC News ↗

The shooting near the largest mosque in San Diego County took place at 11:43 local time. The mother of one of the attackers had called the police two hours earlier to report that her son had fled the house with several of her firearms and a car, dressed in camouflage. Among the victims is a security guard of the center, a father of eight children, who according to Wahl prevented a higher number of casualties. The investigation has been taken over by the FBI. According to the New York Times, anti-Islamic notes were found in the attackers' car. The Independent ↗ ANSA (s odkazom na NYT) ↗

The attack came just days before Eid al-Adha, one of the largest Muslim holidays. Imam Taha Hassane stated that the center is "a house of prayer, not a battlefield." California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the incident as "an act of terror against religious communities." President Donald Trump called it a "terrible situation." BBC News ↗
