At the economic festival in Italy's Trento, Letta — author of the report on the European single market — framed his appeal in one sentence: if Europe wants to be independent and autonomous, it must start with a declaration of independence. He named four areas where this matters most — energy, European defense, financial markets, and infrastructure connectivity. He recalled that the Union once made a similarly bold decision with the euro. It was complicated and exhausting, but without it, the Union would not have the common currency today. This week, Slovak and Czech media were consumed by Trump's threat of a new strike on Iran and Merz's proposal for "associate membership" of Ukraine in the Union. They have so far bypassed the Italian debate about the Union's own strength. And that's precisely where the shift in meaning worth noting lies. In domestic politics, the words "independence" and "sovereignty" usually sound aimed against Brussels — in the rhetoric of Fico's government, as a defense of national powers against the Union's "diktat." Letta turns the same concept on its head: independence not FROM Brussels, but THANKS TO a stronger Brussels — aimed at Washington and Beijing. Letta is a former leader of the Democratic Party and a convinced federalist, Prodi a former Commission President and perhaps Italy's most pro-European voice, Marcegaglia represents the business perspective on competitiveness.
