Schaeffler to cut 3,460 jobs and close five plants

German automotive and industrial components maker Schaeffler plans to cut 3,460 jobs in Europe and close five plants. The measures are a response to weakening demand for auto parts, especially for vehicles with combustion engines. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

In Germany, approximately 2,660 jobs are expected to disappear. The group also plans to end operations in the medium term at plants in Dortmund, Morbach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Berlin and Schwalbach in Hesse. The fifth plant slated for closure is located in Herstal, Belgium. Deutschlandfunk ↗

Schaeffler is facing a worsening environment in the European automotive industry. Demand for cars and components is declining, while manufacturers also face growing competition from China and a demanding transition to electric vehicles. Weaker interest in components for combustion engines is increasing pressure on suppliers. Le Figaro ↗

The planned changes are expected to bring the group annual savings of approximately 300 million euros. These are further extensive cost-saving measures aimed at reducing costs and adapting production capacities to developments in the automotive market. Die Zeit ↗

The changes are also expected to affect Schaeffler's Slovak plants, where, according to available data, they will impact hundreds of employees. However, the specific scope of the measures for Slovakia has not yet been clarified. zilinak.sk ↗
