Poland refuses full implementation of the EU migration pact

Poland will not fully apply the European Union's migration and asylum pact, which is set to take effect on 12 June 2026. Warsaw justifies its approach by citing concerns over national security and the risk that the rules could be exploited in connection with pressure from Russia and Belarus. teraz.sk ↗

According to Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Duszczyk, Warsaw's position is justified, and Poland will apply only certain elements of the pact, particularly those that tighten controls. The Polish government is thus not rejecting the entire framework, but does not want to adopt rules in a form that it believes could weaken border protection or create security risks. forum24.cz ↗

Duszczyk stated that, in his view, Poland's approach is supported by the majority of European Union member states and is also understood by the European Commission. The migration pact is intended to unify part of the EU's asylum and migration rules, but Poland has long been pointing to the specific situation on its eastern border. pravda.sk ↗

Further developments will depend on how the European Commission assesses Poland's limited implementation of the pact after it enters into force. The dispute could influence the broader EU debate on how to reconcile common migration rules with the security concerns of states bordering Belarus and Russia. hnonline.sk ↗
