What Europe Writes: Zelenskyy's Former Minister Calls for Elections, France Allows Assisted Dying, UAE Halts Iran Trade

Financial Times reported that Iran is considering strikes on American military targets in Europe if Washington escalates the war — the report was picked up by news outlets in twenty-two countries, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Italy, and according to Greek media the Pentagon is considering moving Patriot systems to Crete. The United Arab Emirates has meanwhile imposed a complete trade embargo on Iran and the European reference price of gas jumped to its highest level since March. Mychajlo Fedorov, whom Volodymyr Zelenskyj removed from leading the defense ministry in mid-July, is calling for elections even amid war and speaking of a systemic crisis of governance — and in Kyiv on the same day after a raid they removed and according to Ukrainian media also detained the former deputy chief of the presidential office. In France, a law on assisted dying appeared in the official gazette, which Emmanuel Macron promulgated. Overview of 12,419 articles in 37 countries for August 18 and 19. Yellow color in national outlets marks reports from the afternoon update, the rest is the morning edition.

What Doesn't Make It Into Slovak Media

Latvia fined a person who found a hole — and a week later the driver register crashed. The whistleblower who flagged a security gap in the CSDD registry and demanded compensation for it was fined 4,290 euros. A few days later, the register was hit by a cyberattack and the investigation is now also examining the contract with the vendor. It is the most concrete European case of the question where responsible vulnerability disclosure ends and extortion begins — and there was not a word about it in Slovak media.

Iceland's referendum on the European Union. Icelanders are currently deciding on the direction toward the Union — accession negotiations were frozen in 2013 and the application was never formally withdrawn. It is the only current case when a wealthy Western country is considering joining, and it relates to the security shift after 2022: Iceland has no army of its own but hosts radar stations and a base in Keflavík that it now wants to renovate.

Eightieth day of protests against Edi Rama. In an EU candidate country, street protests demanding the prime minister's resignation have been ongoing for nearly three months. However, demonstrators are also insulting the opposition — they shouted "sold-out opposition" in front of the Democratic Party headquarters — so this is not a standard conflict between government and opposition, but a crisis of the entire political representation.

Cumulative Schengen collapse. The Finnish public broadcaster Yle published an analysis of growing internal border controls on the same day the German interior minister extended controls to March 2027. Individual national decisions are covered in our reporting, their cumulative effect is not.
