What Europe is writing about: G7 takes a tougher line on Russian oil, the US and Iran move toward signing a memorandum, and a Russian frigate fired warning shots in the English Channel

G7 leaders at the summit in the French resort of Évian-les-Bains agreed to increase pressure on Russian oil and energy and also discussed further support for Ukraine. After the easing of the Iran crisis, the summit's focus is returning to the war in Ukraine. A framework memorandum between the US and Iran is set to be signed on Friday in Swiss Bürgenstock, but the dispute over Iranian uranium enrichment remains. In the English Channel, a Russian frigate fired warning shots near a British yacht; according to the British Ministry of Defence, they were not aimed at the vessel. This is what the overnight and morning reporting of European media looked like.

🔎 Another angle

  • US "shadow fleet" extracts Iranian oil from Hormuz (El Español, Spain) — Madrid describes the paradox of the US imitating the techniques of China, Russia and Iran to bypass its own sanctions; it also adds context for why Trump "needs Europeans" in Hormuz.
