Meta expands paid services and faces dispute with former manager

On Wednesday, May 27, Meta globally launched paid packages for its key applications Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The new subscriptions are named Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus, and represent a shift in the company's strategy, which has so far relied mainly on free, ad-funded use of these services. The paid versions are meant to offer users expanded features and, in some cases, greater reach. For Instagram, among the new features mentioned is the ability to see who has viewed a story more than once. According to available information, however, the subscription does not mean the removal of ads, so users will mainly be paying extra for additional options within the existing apps. HVG ↗

The move was announced by the company's Chief Product Officer, Naomi Gleit. With this, Meta is responding to the need to diversify its revenue and reduce long-term dependence on advertising. At the same time, the company faces pressure from investors over its extensive spending on artificial intelligence, which is increasing the need for new revenue sources. BBC News ↗

Attention has also turned to a legal dispute between Meta and a former Facebook manager. She took part in a discussion about her book on the social network, but remained silent during the event because of ongoing legal action by her former employer. aktuality.sk ↗

The introduction of subscriptions could signal a broader change in how major social platforms operate. Meta is keeping its free model, but alongside it is creating a paid tier of services for users who want to gain additional tools or benefits. Further developments will show how users respond to the subscriptions and how the legal disputes will affect the company's public image. HVG ↗
