Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which belong to Meta, are adding further news on earnings, regulation, security and the taxation of digital services following the July outage. This week, several WhatsApp users, upon opening the app, saw a notification instead of their conversations stating that their account had been blocked and was under review by the company. El Pais ↗

The American internet company's net profit fell by 14 percent year-on-year in the second financial quarter to 15.85 billion dollars, even though revenue rose by 28 percent. The results were affected mainly by massive investments in artificial intelligence, with the company's expenses growing faster than its revenues. e15.cz ↗

The broader regulatory pressure also includes a new obligation to label numerous images, videos and texts created by artificial intelligence, which has been in effect in the European Union since Sunday. Violating the rules can carry high penalties, in the most serious cases up to 35 million euros.

At the same time, Meta faces privacy questions concerning its smart glasses. In the United Kingdom, police are investigating the case of a TikToker who allegedly used Meta glasses to secretly film people in public. In Germany, considerations have emerged about regulating the use of glasses with cameras at the European Union level, and in Hamburg a complete ban on Google Glasses and other smart glasses is being considered in order to protect women from digital violence. In addition, Indian minister Nitin Gadkari is demanding compensation of 110 million rupees from Meta and other technology companies over allegedly defamatory posts. In Britain, according to a Monday survey by the Fair Tax Foundation, two-thirds of respondents supported an increase in the digital services tax. teraz.sk ↗
