Britain's Labour Party held onto the vacant parliamentary seat in the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras. The by-election was won by Sagal Abdi-Wali, who will replace former Labour leader and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He gave up the mandate after leaving parliament. The Guardian ↗
The result represents relief for the new Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham and also his first major electoral test. The contest in north London was seen as a test of Labour's ability to unite left-wing voters. The party faced significant competition from the British Greens.
Green candidate Zack Polanski ran for the Westminster seat, but his attempt ended in defeat. Labour thus held on to the constituency previously represented by Starmer. The result also showed that despite pressure from the Greens, the party retained its support in this part of London. Politico Europe ↗
During the campaign, Burnham pushed for several policy proposals aimed at boosting Labour's popularity among left-wing voters. These include a more ambitious approach to the United Kingdom's relations with the European Union. seznamzpravy.cz ↗
The by-election took place after the polling stations closed and the votes were subsequently counted. Holding on to Starmer's former seat gives Burnham political support at the start of his tenure as Prime Minister, while also confirming the ongoing contest for left-wing voters between the Labour Party and the Greens.
