In April 2026, Israeli forces detained approximately 175 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla initiative who were sailing with humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The detention took place in international waters. The activists were subsequently transported to Greece, where, accompanied by the Greek coast guard, they boarded four buses heading to an unspecified city in Crete. svet.sme.sk ↗ teraz.sk ↗

This is a continuation of the Global Sumud Flotilla initiative, which already attempted last October to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid there. In that case as well, Israel detained the activists and subsequently deported them from the country. Refresher.sk ↗

Among the detained activists was also a person of Slovak origin from Košice. Spain subsequently criticized the "unlawful detention" of its citizen. Several European governments expressed criticism of Israel's approach in detaining the activists. teraz.sk ↗
