Pierre Gasly from Alpine won Saturday's qualifying for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza and will start from first place on Sunday. The French driver secured his first pole position in his career and surprised the favorites at the circuit where he achieved his only victory in the series to date in 2020. teraz.sk ↗
Gasly defeated George Russell from Mercedes, who took second place. Behind them, Oscar Piastri and Ferrari drivers lined up at the front of the grid. The expected dominance of the home team was thus not confirmed in qualifying, although Ferrari had pace throughout the weekend and Charles Leclerc led Lewis Hamilton in the first practice session. sport.sk ↗
Qualifying also brought disappointment for several well-known names. Fernando Alonso was eliminated in the first part and Carlos Sainz did not get past the second part of qualifying. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished seventh on his home track, but will start the race from the very back of the grid.
Sunday's Italian Grand Prix will thus bring an unusual lineup at the front. Gasly will defend first place against Russell and competitors from McLaren and Ferrari, with Alpine having a chance to convert the surprising qualifying result into the most significant success of the season. El Mundo ↗
