Slovakia rejects the European Commission's proposal for the European Union to obtain part of the revenue from tobacco taxes as a new own resource for its budget. Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that such a step would affect the revenues of member states. Trend ↗

According to the European Commission's estimates, the new system could bring in approximately EUR 11 billion a year for the EU budget. The proposal is part of a broader discussion on new sources of revenue for the Union, which are meant to strengthen its budgetary options.

However, the Slovak government disagrees with financing the European budget at the expense of individual countries' tax revenues. Fico rejects any interference with tobacco taxes and the transfer of part of them under the administration of the European Union. SITA ↗

Details about the final form of the proposal, as well as how revenue would be distributed among member states, have not yet been provided. The measure would require further negotiations between the European Commission and the member states.

The dispute concerns the broader question of the EU's future financing. The Commission is seeking new sources of revenue for the European budget, while Slovakia insists that member states retain control over their own tax revenues. Trend ↗
