Harry Potter Fans Achieved Rerouting of Cable Line Away from Dobby's Grave

Harry Potter fans in Wales achieved a change in the route of electrical interconnection between Ireland and Great Britain to avoid the memorial site of the fictional house-elf Dobby in Pembrokeshire. This is the Greenlink project, which is to have a capacity of 500 megawatts and according to sources costs approximately 500 million euros, or 430 million pounds. seznamzpravy.cz ↗

The memorial was created on a beach known from the film series, where fans leave stones and messages commemorating the character of Dobby. The original route of the underwater electrical cable was supposed to run through the area connected with this place. After fans' disagreement and hundreds of phone calls, which according to sources project manager Simon Ludlam received, the route was adjusted.

The new line is to avoid the memorial, but according to published information it now approaches a bronze burial site area. The project is to connect the electrical grids of Ireland and Wales and increase the possibilities of electricity transmission between both countries.

The case shows that even a symbolic place connected with popular culture can influence the planning of major infrastructure. Further developments will mainly concern the continuation of work on the adjusted route and assessment of its impact on the affected territory.
