Cold War Kids Open Archive for Debut's 20th Anniversary. Robbers & Cowards Gets Four Unreleased Tracks
Cold War Kids are not returning to their 2006 debut just symbolically — they went back directly to the source recordings and found another piece of an untold story there. Spin ↗
The release of Robbers & Cowards / Complete Cowards (20th Anniversary Edition) will come out on October 30th under the UMe label. It adds four songs to the original album that remained unfinished from the original recordings, and six concert recordings made in the USA and Europe in 2007, when the album was beginning to take off. The collection will be released as a double LP on black vinyl, in a limited edition on brick-red vinyl with alternative artwork and as a double CD. Spin ↗
The band hinted at the project all summer — the songs Loyalty and There Goes The Night, both coming from the debut period, already came out in newly completed versions. The remaining two unreleased recordings are called Jesse Latour and She Can Do No Wrong. Spin ↗
For singer and main songwriter Nathan Willett, the whole exercise felt like traveling through a time portal. "I think I will never feel such warmth and nostalgia for any other music as I do for this album," he says. "Returning to the music, lyrics and visuals of this record is like entering a portal back to our beginnings in 2004 to 2006. Before that whirlwind tour, before this band became our future, we came together as friends who shared inspiration and influences." Spin ↗
He describes what emerged from it as "bluesy, punky, primitive, ethereal, spirited, gentle and sincere sound". However, it was also a period when the band had no idea where that sound would take them. "It was a blissfully naive time. We worked extremely hard without any ambitions, without connections in the music industry, without a clue," Willett adds. "What we had was a tight group of friends who would stay up late and talk about music, art and life." Spin ↗
