Czechoslovakia Commemorates 58 Years Since Occupation

Czechoslovakia on Friday, August 21, 2026 commemorates 58 years since the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops, which in 1968 halted the reform process in the country. Soldiers began crossing borders on the evening of August 20 and the following day occupied most strategic locations. STVR (Spravy) ↗

The anniversary of the occupation is commemorated annually by politicians in front of the Czech Radio building on Vinohradska Street in Prague. This location was among the main centers of resistance against occupying forces. According to Czech politician Andrej Babiš, the period following the invasion marked the beginning of an era of unfreedom. teraz.sk ↗

In Slovakia, the significance of the date was recalled by National Council Chairman Richard Raši. He stated that August 21, 1968 cannot be forgotten, as even after decades it carries a powerful legacy. Chairman of the Association of Towns and Municipalities of Slovakia Jozef Božik emphasized that the invasion brought loss of life, fear, humiliation and subsequent decades of unfreedom and normalization. hnonline.sk ↗

The role of media during the occupation is also being commemorated. Czechoslovak Television broadcast secretly for two weeks following the military invasion, with events preceded by the relaxation of the regime following Alexander Dubček's rise to power. Archival materials capture the atmosphere of cities filled with military equipment as well as the resistance of residents against Soviet power. The anniversary also raises questions about how 1968 is taught in schools and how society comes to terms with memories of the occupation. teraz.sk ↗
