Babiš defends budget deficit ahead of no-confidence vote

The Chamber of Deputies will convene Tuesday afternoon on the opposition's motion to declare no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The opposition ODS, Mayors and Independents, Pirates, Christian Democrats and TOP 09 criticize the government primarily over the planned state budget deficit for next year and over the prime minister's possible conflict of interest. The motion to convene the session was signed by all 92 opposition deputies. In his Sunday speech, Babiš defended the budgetary easing and stated that the Czech Republic can afford higher spending. According to the prime minister, it is now necessary to invest primarily in healthcare, security, the army, and highway construction. The deputies will also discuss other opposition objections to the government. The outcome of the vote could affect the political situation ahead of the elections as well as future relations between coalition and opposition parties.
