Metoděj Jílek neuspel na 1500 metrov, bude českým vlajkonošom na záverečnom ceremoniáli

The Czech speed skater Metoděj Jílek did not turn his third Olympic start into a medal. At the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, he finished in sixteenth place in the 1500 metres race. He complicated a relationally weaker track with psychological problems during preparation for the start. Jílek himself admitted that he had lost the match even before the race began. He explained that he had been thinking about negative things, which complicated his concentration on his performance. Nevertheless, a few days before this race he achieved excellent results on longer distances, consisting of a gold and a silver medal.

Despite the disappointment over the result in the fifteen-hundred, Jílek is pleased about the recognition he was given as one of the flag bearers of the Czech delegation at the closing ceremony. He will share this role with the experienced speed skater Martina Sáblíková, who is considered a legend of Czech winter sport. The Czech Olympic Committee described this choice as a combination of an experienced legend with an emerging talent.

Despite the disappointing result in the 1500 metres, experts agree that Jílek has a great future ahead of him. They point to his dominance on longer distances and his potential to spark an interesting rivalry at the top level of the international speed skating world. Czechs will be able to cheer him on in his future Olympic starts.
