The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) expressed support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino's bid for another term in office. It made the decision at an extraordinary congress in Tokyo, which, according to available statements, reduced the likelihood of his removal. Der Standard ↗
The AFC's stance has changed compared to August, when the confederation criticized the Swiss official's actions. Its president, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, has now given Infantino his full support. The shift could influence the power struggle in world football, since Asia is among FIFA's major continental confederations. sport.sk ↗
Infantino faces criticism over his leadership style, but the AFC's support strengthens his position ahead of the next election. Representatives of Asian football have thus also sided with his continuation in office despite previous objections. Tagesspiegel ↗
A candidate for FIFA president needs the support of member federations to be re-elected. The AFC's stance could therefore matter in gaining votes and in shaping alliances among the various continental confederations. Further developments will largely depend on whether other regions join Asia's support and whether the opposition manages to put forward a joint rival candidate.
