SaS labeled the salary increase in the Interior Ministry a pre-election move

The Freedom and Solidarity party criticizes the planned salary increase in the Interior Ministry announced by Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok. According to the party, the measure does not represent a systemic solution but a pre-election giveaway. hnonline.sk ↗

Police officers are to see their salaries rise by an average of 350 euros starting next year. The increase is also to apply to other employees of the Interior Ministry, including firefighters and district office workers. The minister announced the planned changes at a press conference on Thursday. teraz.sk ↗

SaS claims that the salary increase alone does not solve the long-term problems in the functioning of the security forces or the entire ministry. The party announced that, should it participate in government, it would push for a thorough audit. Its goal would be to review the management and setup of individual measures within the Interior Ministry. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗

The opposition's criticism mainly concerns the timing and manner of announcing the salary changes. SaS links them to the pre-election period and rejects their presentation as a permanent systemic measure. Available statements do not indicate whether the party has proposed a specific alternative remuneration model for police officers, firefighters, or district office workers.

Further developments will depend on whether the government incorporates the planned salary increase into the budget and how other political parties respond to it. Through the announced audit, SaS has also signaled that, should it enter government, it would want to review decisions made within the Interior Ministry.
