Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Francis Halzen for Neutrino Research

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Belgian-American astrophysicist Francis Halzen. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honored him for his decisive contribution to building the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. kultura.pravda.sk ↗

Neutrinos are among the most difficult particles to observe in the universe. Halzen's research made it possible to detect them through the IceCube Observatory, which is located in the ice sheet near the South Pole. The instrument is designed to track particles arriving from space. teraz.sk ↗

The laureate is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His work focused on high-energy neutrinos produced in astrophysical processes. Observing them has opened a new way of studying the distant universe and has contributed to the development of neutrino astronomy. Index.hu ↗

Halzen is the sole laureate in this year's physics category. The award recognizes both his scientific discoveries and his role in creating the large particle detector in the Antarctic ice. n-tv ↗

Neutrino research allows scientists to gather information about cosmic phenomena that cannot be studied with light alone. The IceCube Observatory is therefore important for further understanding the origin of high-energy particles and the processes taking place in the distant universe. BBC News ↗
