EU current account surplus falls in second quarter

The European Union's current account balance recorded a seasonally adjusted surplus of €80.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Its value corresponded to 1.6 percent of the EU's gross domestic product. teraz.sk ↗

The surplus declined compared with the previous period. The decline was mainly caused by a deterioration in the services balance, which captures the difference between the value of services provided and received in foreign economic relations.

The surplus on the primary income account also decreased significantly. This account mainly includes income and expenditure related to work, investment and other financial relations between EU residents and the rest of the world. Trend ↗

The overall current account result thus remained positive, but its surplus was lower than in the previous period. Seasonal adjustment makes it possible to compare data without regular fluctuations, which are related, for example, to the time of year.

The figure represents the aggregate result of the member states of the European Union. The development of the current account is mainly influenced by foreign trade in services, investment income and other cross-border income flows. Further data will show whether the decline in the surplus will also be reflected in the development of the balance of payments in the following quarter.
